Homeschool Christian Academy
The 2012-2013 year will mark the 15th+ year Homeschool Christian Academy (HCA), –formerly known as “Heartland”—has been supporting homeschool families throughout the area. This K-8th grade ministry, now a part of Overland Park Christian Church at 7600 W. 75th Street in north central Johnson County, has thrived because of the valuable, fun hands-on experience it provides to each child in an unmistakably Christian environment. Meeting Wednesdays from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Labor Day through Memorial Day in their own individual-grade classroom, the experience is valuable both for the quality, memorable learning and for the social aspects it adds to your child’s overall homeschool experience. Many families have come to appreciate how solid these friendships are as their children pursue these friendships outside of HCA and support each other at other homeschool activities and classes, well after the HCA years are over. The experience is fun because of the loving Christian teachers who creatively guide your precious children through history and science projects that make the learning interactive and the info “stick.” These subjects are taught completely enough that as a conscientious parent, you may consider them “covered” for the year; or you may choose to have the HCA experience enhance–in the messy, more-time-consuming-to-plan ways–what you are teaching at home. Either way, the day is beneficial for both your children and yourself. Rounding out the HCA encounter is weekly Reader’s Theater, PE and recess, as well as seasonal parties and low-key Reader’s Theater presentations.
We welcome you to see why this ministry has earned its outstanding reputation. Please contact Molly Fisher or Allison Cloud at http://www.opccdoc.org/hca.htm or by calling (913) 800-8578 (direct line) or (913) 677-4646 ext. 238 (the church). Registration for new families has begun!
**********
Homeschool Christian Academy (HCA) – formerly known as “Heartland”—has announced the scope of its 2012-2013 middle school (Grades 7-8) curriculum. Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Physical Science will be used for the science portion, while the history portion (hand selected from various resources) will be World History from 1800’s through the present and Voting/the Election Process. Parents are not expected to teach these subjects, but need to help hold students responsible for completing the outside work of reading, tests, and other pertinent assignments, making this a step up from an elementary classroom experience. The weekly class time together for science focuses on doing the experiments and discussing results and implications. History is covered inclusively, rather than just one region or country at a time. For instance, just after WWI, Hitler became a political figure, Hirohito rose to power in Japan due to his father’s mental illness, American women were allowed to vote… The voting process, the election, cultures and religions are key components to our study of history, including how these aspects have changed over time. The weekly time together is rounded out with Readers’ Theater and PE.
HCA is a ministry of Overland Park Christian Church, 7600 W. 75th Street, meeting Wednesdays 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Enrollment is for the day, not the class, which allows greater flexibility and time for the teacher to cover the topics well, in addition to the building a strong sense of community within the classroom of students. Please feel free to contact Molly Fisher, director of HCA, at (913) 800-8578 (direct line) or (913) 677-4646 ext 238 (church) with any questions or to inquire about enrollment availability
