The WCTU sponsors Children’s Contests for grades K-12 to promote abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs and the abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

The Contests include a Picture Coloring Contest (grades K-3), a Poster Contest (grades 4-12), and an Essay Contest (grades 4-12). K-3 competes within its own grade in the Coloring Contest. The Poster and Essay Contests compete within divisions: grades 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12.  

Modest cash prizes, increased in 2011 at the state level, are awarded to the top 4 winners in each grade or division. First place winning entries are sent to the National Contest. Larger, modest cash prizes are awarded to national winners. (All awards are given by private funds, and no tax dollars support the WCTU work or awards.) All Kansas participants are given a small participation award for their work.
