Happy New Year! Have you broken your resolutions for the year yet? I would like to suggest a few homeschool resolutions for MPE member families to consider for 2015. No, I don’t want you to join the Trim Healthy Mama group my wife is discussing – they are liable to convert me to change how I eat.
My resolutions revolve around some significant homeschool activities that will strengthen your efforts and help homeschooling remain legal. There are a few factors that contribute to the ongoing success of homeschooling in this region. I would like to point out some of these.
The lack of legal headaches that we enjoy is the first and most obvious contribution to aiding us as homeschooling families. Please remember that within my time as a homeschooler, Kansas and Nebraska families were arrested for the same practice you are engaged in today. For years we have lobbied in both Kansas and Missouri.
On Feb. 19 there is an event called Day Under the Dome in Topeka. It would be a great time for a field trip. See the renovations to the Capitol. Visit your legislators in their offices. Join homeschoolers from across the state to let our representatives know we care and we are still involved. Resolve to set this day aside for a trip. Or would you rather go the year after homeschooling is legally restricted?
Moms are generally carrying the greatest burden in the day-to-day efforts of homeschooling. Your work is not unnoticed. MPE offers a Women’s Encouragement Day on Jan. 31. Get together with other homeschool moms, be encouraged in your journey, hear that you are not alone in your struggles, be treated like a queen with a wonderful catered luncheon and lots of chocolate. Join with other moms in small group breakout sessions.
Some comments from our evaluation last year in response to what the women attending enjoyed most about the day:
- “God’s presence! Everything!”
- “This is my 6th year attending and I am SO glad I didn’t miss today.”
- “God’s presence-a room full of women desperate for God and His grace and mercy.”
This event is offered on a free will offering basis. Resolve to have someone stay with the children and, mom, have a getaway day.
The annual Conference and Curriculum Fair is April 24 and 25. Our surveys show this is the most important event MPE offers.
One of the benefits of this conference with our members attending en masse, is that this allows us to keep our membership fees lower. Why, you may ask?
Well, the vendors attending our show have the opportunity to demonstrate their products to you, the homeschool consumer. They rent their booths, which basically covers the cost of the convention.
Our attendance runs about 50 percent of our membership. As an MPE member it doesn’t cost anything extra to attend. Visit the vendor hall, see our young entrepreneurs, drop in on some of the workshops or register your children for our children’s conference.
I have people tell me they really don’t need to attend. Hebrews 10:24-25 exhorts us, “And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”
I continue to benefit from attending these conferences, meeting vendors and attending workshops. I’m still learning. Your attendance would encourage me and many others. Please resolve to attend this year’s
These are my resolutions for 2015 for the homeschool community. I hope you will join me.
