2026 Capitol Day Speaker:

Amy Buchmeyer | Threats and Opportunities for Homeschool Freedom

A Wisconsin native, Amy was homeschooled K–12 along with her four younger siblings. She developed a passion for politics while involved in Generation Joshua in high school and eventually double majored in politics & government and criminal justice at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee.

Upon graduation, Amy returned to Wisconsin where she worked as a field director for Americans for Prosperity. She later received her JD from the University of Wisconsin Law School, where she served as president of the Federalist Society and articles editor of the Wisconsin Law Review.

Amy Buchmeyer, Esq.

Now, at HSLDA, Amy serves as the contact attorney for eight states and one US territory.

Amy loves to travel, and, in addition to Wisconsin and Tennessee, has lived in Idaho, Colorado, England, Thailand, and now Virginia. When not at work, you can usually find her buried in a book (she averages over 200 a year), traveling, or overwatering her 23 jade plants.

Highlights of your Capitol Day field trip can include:

    • Helping to distribute sweet treats and homeschool fact sheets to legislators
    • Meeting personally with your own state legislators (make appointment prior)
    • Touring the Capitol and the Dome
    • Observing the legislature in action
    • Learning from legislators and others about how Kansas government works

Building a positive relationship with our state legislators will help keep homeschools thriving in Kansas. Meeting up for Homeschool Capitol Day provides the encouraging presence of other homeschool families as well as many firsthand educational experiences!

Capitol Day Walk-Through

Our Homeschool Capitol Day is coming up! What should you expect to see and do? This video discusses FAQs such as parking, area attractions, a walk-through of the Kansas Capitol, and more!

Please contact Jennifer Laporte at office@kansashomeschool.org for any questions.

Other Capitol Day FAQs

  • What should we do for lunch?

Lunch options include packing your own food, as well as eating in the second floor north wing or ground floor eating area.

  • Should young children (ages 5 and under) come as well?

We welcome families with children of all ages to Capitol Day.  For the sake of safety and courtesy, parents must stay in close proximity to children at all times.

Families may choose activities to attend based on their children’s capabilities.

Visiting legislators and going on tours require extensive walking. Additionally, activities such as observing a legislative session require sitting quietly

The event is finished.
