Homeschool students can enjoy making these easy summer drinks that are common to Bangladesh, my home country. They can also learn about a different part of the world in doing so!
The weather in southern Asia is pretty hot most of the year, not just in the summertime. We love to drink different types of fresh juices and smoothies, starting with lassi drinks.
1) Mango Lassi
Lassi is one kind of South Asian yogurt drink. It can be sweet or salty. Because of its yogurt base, lassi is a healthy, refreshing option for summer.
Ingredients:
- 1.5 cup diced fresh mango / mango pulp
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1 cup milk
- 3 tablespoons sugar or sweetener
- 1 cup ice cubes
- Half tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Instructions:
- Combine all the ingredients in the blender except for the lemon juice. Blend it for 2 minutes.
- Add the lemon juice and blend it for another few seconds.
- Enjoy fresh, or keep in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
2) Cold Coffee
Cold coffee is another popular drink in Bangladesh. You can buy it from street vendors, who make it with coffee and milk.
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon instant coffee powder
- 2 cups of whole milk
- 5-6 ice cubes
- 1 tablespoon of chocolate syrup
- Whipped cream
Instructions:
- Put the water into a cup or glass and add the sugar and instant coffee powder.
- Mix it with a spoon until the sugar and instant coffee is mixed well with the water.
- Add milk and ice cubes, then put the mixture into a blender or processor. Blend it for 1 minute.
- Before serving, add the whipped cream and chocolate syrup to the top of the cup or glass.
- Enjoy fresh, or keep it in the freezer for up to 24 hours.
3) Mint Lemonade
Mint lemonade is refreshing, healthy and extremely easy to make.
Ingredients:
● 1 fresh lemon
● 3 tablespoons of sugar
● 6-8 ice cubes
● 1 cup water
● Pinch of salt
● 1/2 cup mint leaves
Instructions:
- Squeeze the lemon juice from the lemon.
- Add the juice, sugar, ice cubes, water and salt to a blender and blend it all together for a minute.
- Add the mint leaves to the blender and blend it for 10-15 seconds.
- Enjoy fresh.
4) Banana Lassi
Instead of mango, try making this drink with banana, yogurt and milk.
Ingredients:
- 2 bananas
- 1.5 cups plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons sugar, honey, or other sweetener
- 4-5 ice cubes
- 2 cups whole milk
Instructions:
- Add all the ingredients together in the blender. Blend it for 1 minute.
- Enjoy fresh, or keep in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
Juices and smoothies are an easy, inexpensive way to keep cool around the world.
Enjoy these drinks from Bangladesh in the Kansas City summer, and take a moment to think of children like you in other parts of the world!
