Finding homeschool community
While homeschool families can access more resources than ever before, it can still feel lonely to be the “only” homeschool family you know in your neighborhood, or within walking distance.
Back in the 1990s and 2000s, MPE used to have a “membership directory” for those who opted in to receiving one by mail each year.
It listed family addresses, phone numbers, year the family started homeschooling, and up to three curriculum choices.
Some of the feedback we heard on how these directories helped create homeschool community:
- Instant answers to curriculum and other homeschool-related questions. If a mom was thinking of a new curriculum option and saw another family using it, she could call and find out what their experience had been like.
- Location of nearby homeschoolers. Families could see at a glance others who shared the same zip code, city, and nearby residences.
- Support for homeschooling businesses and entrepreneurs. If MPE members wanted to find a local plumber, electrician, or other professional who also homeschooled, their first stop involved the membership directory’s business and professional services listings.
This “Homeschoolers Near Me” initiative is our way to revitalize and revamp the membership directory for the next generation of families!
