“Don’t homeschoolers miss out on prom?” used to be a popular refrain during the 1980s and earlier decades, while homeschooling was still relatively outside the mainstream.
Now people are asking, “Why do homeschoolers have prom?” For organizations like ours, we’ve loved seeing the huge sea change in attitudes toward homeschooling!
Our April 10 high school homeschool prom is another opportunity to reflect on how this event can benefit our robust Kansas City area community!
Proms give an opportunity to make meaningful group memories.
Since we’ve started hosting homeschool proms, the groups of thoughtful and well-versed young men and women attending have always added fun and flair to these experiences!
Our 2023 prom featured professional pictures and a red-carpet walk, along with a Murder Mystery Party and dinner.
Then attendees moved on to Main Event for unlimited bowling, 2-hour arcade, ropes course, and laser tag. You can see a collection of photos from our Facebook album!
This year’s 2026 event features an “Under the Stars” theme. Attendees can dance the night away at the Camelot Ballroom in Overland Park. Sweet and salty snacks will be provided, along with a chance to get pictures taken with dates and friends.
Enjoy a safe place to socialize.
We’ve made this event open to a wide range of ages (14-19). Participants sign a code of conduct that applies to all participants, members and guests, at the time of registration.
We also offer spaces for parents to chaperone. Adults need to submit to and pay ($20 billed separately) for a background check. They can indicate their willingness to volunteer on the registration form.
These spaces are limited, so if you have an interest, please sign up as early as possible!
Give back to your local community.
Many of the features of this special evening – from catering and photography to decorations and hosting – come from local homeschool families and businesses.
Because of our extensive network in the Kansas City area, we love to support those we know and work with. You may see familiar faces and smiles in our support staff and volunteers who help make this event possible each year!
Learn new skills, or try something different.
We will not have dance instruction at prom this year, but many of our regular ballroom dance attendees would be happy to help new students learn the basics of dancing!
Any student interested in learning can ask a chaperone, who can can easily point them to someone who will help them try out in a welcoming environment.
Of course, let’s also not forget how prom can encourage the real-life skills of feeling comfortable in upscale locations and making new friends!
If you still haven’t signed up for this year’s prom, don’t fret – registration is still open. But hurry, since the last day to sign up is April 3!
