MPE’s free How to Homeschool workshop will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Park Woods Presbyterian Church (13001 Quivira Rd., Overland Park, KS 66213).

By the end of the workshop, you’ll learn:

How to meet legal requirements for your state of residence (as homeschool laws vary by state)
The latest options and resources to tailor your curriculum and choose the best teaching techniques for your unique student
Educational overviews on teaching multiple ages and grades, school schedules, recordkeeping, and more
Greater confidence to begin or continue your homeschool journey!

As part of our How to Homeschool workshop, MPE’s Unique Learners Coordinator, Suzanne Wandling, will discuss the benefits of Learning Screenings. Families of children with special needs – dyslexia, speech delays, and sensory processing issues – may connect with providers about scheduling screenings. For example, speech screenings help detect potential speech or language delays, speech disorders, and other issues that may affect a person’s ability to communicate effectively.

NEW FOR 2026! We will provide snacks and refreshments. Please RSVP by Friday, Aug. 7, so we have an accurate headcount.

To allow everyone to focus on the program content, please limit attendance to adults and nursing babies.

Beginning any endeavor well is a key to long-term success. We’ll help you set expectations, meet legal requirements, tailor curriculum, and choose philosophies for your unique family. You will leave with resources and confidence to begin or continue your homeschool journey.

Understanding and fulfilling homeschool law in Kansas and Missouri can seem overwhelming. Learn how to implement the laws into your daily schedule as a busy homeschool mom and help to keep you organized in the process.

Record-keeping, Learning Preferences, & Special Needs

Are you overwhelmed with the idea of keeping homeschool records, teaching different ages and grades, or accommodating students with special needs? Have no fear! Homeschooling is inherently customizable to each student. We’ll show you how to use free or low-cost tools available in your community in tailoring your homeschool to best fit your unique family.

Jennifer Laporte | How to Homeschool

Jennifer Laporte is a veteran homeschool mom still in the trenches. As a board member for Midwest Parent Educators, she helps facilitate learning screenings at MPE’s annual homeschool conference and co-coordinates MPE’s Used Curriculum Sale. She represents MPE at the Kansas state homeschool association, CHECK. As CHECK’s President, she monitors the legislature, informs homeschool families about legislation impacting homeschool freedom & helps coordinate Homeschool Capitol Day. She desires to help build the homeschool community into a tangible expression of God’s generosity and provision, while also preserving homeschool freedom for generations to come.

Midwest Parent Educators strives to equip homeschool families, encourage home educators, promote home education, and protect homeschooling freedom.

Suzanne Wandling

Suzanne Wandling | Unique Learners Coordinator

Suzanne Wandling, CEO and Co-founder of Homeschoolers.com supports families through coaching, training, and individualized instruction. Suzanne partners with families to help them to confidently homeschool and experience joy in the process. Growing up a Southerner, she attended the University of New Orleans, earning degrees in Elementary and Special Education. Suzanne moved to Kansas to attend the University of Kansas and completed a master’s degree in Special Education. As a trained ICF Coach and Orton Gillingham trained educator, Suzanne is passionate about equipping and encouraging families. Suzanne lives in Kansas with her husband Warren, two daughters, and rescue dog.

Good morning,
I would like to attend the workshop at the Monticello Library but don’t have anyone to watch my 5 and 6 year olds. Can I bring them with (Monticello Library, August 9th)?

  Great question, Chloe! Yes, please feel free to bring your 5- and 6-year-olds to the library with you for our how-to-homeschool workshop. You may want to bring some activities and/or materials they can enjoy while the adults chat!
