Keshia McAfee was homeschooled from kindergarten all through high school. She has just finished Bible school and recently moved back to her home in Olathe. She’s working a part-time job and teaching Spanish. Here’s her take on her homeschool experience.
Did you have any experience with other schooling systems: public school/private school/charter school/etc.?
No, I didn’t really have any other schooling system experience outside of homeschooling besides private school for preschool, which really doesn’t count!
How did homeschooling affect the person you are today?
Homeschooling definitely prepared me for life in general. I am able to hone in on my skills as an individual and quickly learn things on my own for any need. Honestly, I have no complaints about my homeschooled background.
What advantages, if any, do you see with homeschooling?
Homeschooling teaches you how to think outside of the box. It also teaches you to relate to a wider range of people than just your peers. Homeschooling teaches you to be an independent learner, which is such a necessary skill in college!
What disadvantages, if any, do you see with homeschooling?
There really are no disadvantages to homeschooling.
What surprised/challenged you the most about homeschooling?
The most challenging thing for me with homeschooling was actually relating to my peers that went to public school. During my elementary and middle school years, I felt like I was always ahead of my peers in academics and maturity. As a result, I didn’t have too many friends outside of the homeschooling arena during that time.
Would you homeschool your own kids? Why or why not?
Yes, I hope to homeschool my own kids. I feel that homeschooling really pulls the best out of a child, and I will want my children to be the best that they can be.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I now teach Spanish and would love to have more students! If you are interested in Spanish or even asking me questions about my homeschooling experience, please do not hesitate to contact me. My email address is lifeofadven
