Fun, Simple Kindergarten Homeschool Ideas

By March 4, 2024No Comments

Kindergarten homeschool ideas can be overwhelming. How do you even begin to plan your child’s introduction into school? Are you teaching them too much? Not enough?

The beauty of homeschooling is that, especially at such a young age, you are free to structure your child’s education in a way that is stress-free and flexible. There are so many ways to approach homeschooling a kindergartner.

Keep it simple

School doesn’t have to be complicated at this age. Focusing on the basics can cut down the stress to “do it all.”

Reading

If your child seems to be displaying signs of reading readiness, area homeschool moms have recommended programs such as Easy Peasy (reading), Horizons (phonics/reading), Bob Books (reading resource), and All About Reading.

My Father’s World and Sonlight also come highly recommended, and encompass a wider range of subjects.

Math essentials

Math curriculums that provide a kindergarten level include Math-U-See, RightStart Math, Life of Fred, Singapore Math, and Saxon.

Handwriting

Learning to print letters is a great accompaniment to learning letter sounds and forming words. Acclaimed programs include Handwriting Without Tears and A Reason for Handwriting.

Extracurricular fun activities

Field trips are a memorable way to learn. The zoo or nature center, the library, museums, and even the playground can provide hours of fun and education.

Let them soak in what older siblings are learning

When your kindergartener is not the oldest, they can gain so much by simply being in the same environment as their older siblings.

Moms are often surprised when their young children rattle off their older sibling’s memory work, historical events, or science facts.

Take advantage of their “spongy” brains and have them sit in on history reading or science lessons. They may not grasp everything, but they will store up much more than you think!

Cultivate a ‘learning is fun’ attitude

Trying to hold to too strict of a schedule, or tackling too much, can cause young children to get tired of school early. At this point, easing them into the swing of structured learning can help them to get excited but not be overwhelmed.

Making learning fun can be simple! Play counting games with bite-size candy; make play dough together to form shapes, letters, and numbers; step outside and identify different leaves, trees, and flowers. The possibilities are endless.
